Electric Scooter

This project started with an overly confident group of friends trying to find ways to pass time during winter break. Our initially assumed 3 week long build extended over the whole semester, as we ran into many roadblocks and had to come up with creative solutions.

Not having access to welding lead to the decision of buying a cheap scooter and modifying it. The trend of 'cheap' remained with all other aspects of the design. The battery and motor selection alone took a whole week as we made spreadsheets comparing performance and price for all possible combinations of the two. Most of the other parts were either machined by us or found in the school.

Within out bounds we tried our best to remain professional using knowledge of Formula SAE design procedures. We created CAD designs to ensure packaging, and ran FEA simulations to ensure structural integrity. We even got a little fancy with Topology Optimization Simulations in the hopes reducing mass.

In the end, against all our doubts, the scooter carried us and ran, what seemed like, faster than sound! The ride back from the engineering building to my dorm was one of the most fulfilling moments of my life!
